What are animation studios, you may ask? Well as the name suggests, these studios are much like the artists studios except that, these are geared for production of animated films. Animation requires certain specific technology and computer generated effects which are employed in making of these films nowadays. Accordingly, production facilities for animation movies alone can provide these cutting edge technologies and hence, all animation movie makers need to work with such studios to produce animation movies or films.

Sometimes animation studios are production facilities or they might be a corporate entity. For instance, one of the earliest animation studios in the world is A. Film /S established in Copenhagen, Denmark as early as 1988. It is the most well known Scandinavian animation studio and has successfully produced several traditional as well as computer animated films, TV series and commercials. Well known animations like Thumbelina, Once Upon A Forest were produced here.

Animation Studios Pixar Pixar, one of the well known computer generated animation movie making studio, was established in the year 1984 when John Lasseter left Disney to join George Lucas in his computer generated film making unit. Many have been award winning ones such as Wall E – others have been equally popular and breathtaking evidences of computer generated animation. Movies such as UP, TOY STORY, FINDING NEMO, CARS are just some of the movies from this stable.

Animation studios have been on the rise in India and have witnessed growth even in the recent economic slump that came about. The animation industry grew by about 20% last year and it is projected to grow by 49% this year. This has happened due to the globalization which has brought in awareness and popularity of the animation movies. The rise in animation movies around the world and given the talented resources to be found in India, this has given rise to several animation studios who are working on outsourced projects from aboard as well as indigenous projects being developed here.

One of the leading animation studios in India is Toonz Animation India based in Thiruvanthapuram which is probably the largest in South East Asia. Thus, animation studios are on the rise in India with work coming in from all parts of the world who seek to use Indian talent for their productions.

What is Animation

0

Animation makes use of the phenomenon of optical illusion. It creates the impression of movement by showing still images in a very fast sequence. This is a form of art which was discovered towards the beginnings of the 20th century. Animation is usually done with the help of cartoon drawings and hence, animated movies are a delight and source of entertainment for children especially. Initial years of it’s development, the frames for animated movies were hand drawn; there can be as many as 24 drawings for a time lapse of 1 second.

What is Animation Animation has come a long way in the form of art and entertainment in our lives. It was first discovered that, since the impression of an image lasts on our retina for about a fraction of a second, by moving still images rapidly in a sequence faster than that, we can create the illusion of movement. This is the technique that is used in animation to bring still images alive in front of our eyes. Animation in the beginning was based on hand drawn images as mentioned earlier and hence, were a laborious process. Nowadays, with the aid of graphics and computers, the production of cartoons and animations based on them is so much easier. Still images of a single character is photographed or drawn in a way it would be every fraction of a second or so; the slight movements and changes are captured in each frame consequently and then transferred into film. In the film, these slides or frames are made to change very rapidly, creating the illusion of movement and hence, animation films are born.

The history of animation can be traced back as early as the Paleolithic cave paintings whereby animals were shown with multiple limbs and are superimposed which clearly shows an attempt at animation. In the world of movies, it is difficult to point out who was the creator of this technique since several people were working on this around the same time. For instance, Georges Méliès comes close to being one of the firsts who discovered stop motion animation. He stopped his camera rolling by accident while filming a bus driving by. When he had fixed the camera and it started rolling again, it recorded a hearse going by. In totality, it seemed as if he had converted a bus into a hearse.

The animated short films came to be known as cartoons and were started around 1910. Around this time, cartoon movies started being shown in theatres. Initially, the frames of animated movies were hand drawn and then they were transferred to transparent acetate worksheets which were known as cels. Here the drawings were filled with colour and then these cels were photographed and converted into a film. This cel based animation method remained most popular till the 21st century when it became dominated by computer generated graphics and images. Hand made drawings were initially fed into the system and then, the computer itself could generate images which could then be made to show movement. The animation movies made on computer can either be transferred on a 35 mm film or newer film devices like digital video.

Thus, animation has come a long way from the time of it’s origin and it is a challenging but creative field of art infused into the camera which brings to life our imagination and preserves our childhood.

Animation – What is Computer Animation?

0

A Computer animation (or CGI animation) refers to the art of creating moving images by using computers. It is a component of the computer graphics and animation. It is being created increasingly by using 3D computer graphics. The 2D computer graphics are also widely used for low bandwidth, stylistic and quick real-time rendering requirements. In some cases, the target of the animation is the PC itself however, in major cases it is other medium like movies In case when the computer animation is used in the movies, it is referred to as computer-generated imagery(CGI) or computer-generated imaging.

Computer Animation In order to create the illusion of movement, an image is shown on the computer screen and it is continually replaced by a new image which is similar to the previous image however it is advanced slightly in the time domain. The images are displayed at a rate of 24 or 30 frames per second. This technique is similar to the technique used for creating illusion in television and motion pictures. The

Computer animation is basically a digital successor to the art of frame-by-frame animation of 2D illustrations and stop motion animation of 3D models. For creating the 3D animations, objects are first created on the computer screen and then 3D figures are rigged along with a virtual skeleton. In case of 2D figure animations, the separate objects and separate transparent layers are used with or without a virtual skeleton. After this, the limbs, mouth, clothes, eyes, other structural parts are moved by the animator on the key frames. In a morphing or tweening process, the computer automatically calculates the differences in appearance between key frames. Rendering is done finally in the animation.

In case of 3D animations, all the frames are required to be rendered after the completion of modelling. For 2D vector animations, the rendering process constitutes the illustration of the key frame and tweened frames are rendered if required. The rendered frames are transferred to a different medium like film or digital video for pre-recorded presentations. The rendering of the frames is also done in real time as they are shown to the end-user audience. There are software in the end users computer that do rendering of the frames in real time and it is used by the low bandwidth animations that are transmitted via the internet such as 2D Flash, X3D.

Animation – The International Tournée of Animation

0

The International Tournée of Animation refers to the annual touring program of animated films which were selected and assembled from films from many countries worldwide. These are the films which existed from the time period of 1970 to the late 1980s. These movies were released to cinemas, college campuses, art centres and museums across the US. A typical Tournée program used to run about 105 minutes and included up to 15 to 24 animated films in the 16mm format. Each such film was 1 – 2 minutes to 15 – 18 minutes in length.

Many such films were acquired because of the result of Wright’s travels to a large number of countries for the international animated film festivals which were sponsored by ASIFA. The list of festivals included the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, the Ottawa International Animated Film Festival in Canada after 1976, the Zagreb Festival and the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in Japan.

The International Tournée of Animation Till the time of collapse of the Iron Curtain, ASIFA has helped in bridging the gap between East and West. It assisted the animators from Eastern Europe in attending festivals in the West and in visiting studios in the Europe and North America, as well as showing their films in-person. Prescott Wright filmmakers John Halas, John Hubley and Faith Hubley worked hard to establish international relations and arrange for these screenings in cities along with ASIFA.

The efforts made by ASIFA had led to the increased visibility of animation movies through theatrical screenings. In the mid-1970s, the Tournée has started screening in cinemas, along with Landmark Theatres chain but gradually seen in many smaller "art houses" throughout the country. In the year 1986, Prescott Wright sold the rights for organising the Tournées to the Expanded Entertainment group in LA that continued to organize the event for many years under the Wright’s guidance.
