Animation Movies & Games
Animation – Movies Vs Video Games
0The creation of animation video games differs from creating animations for movies. The major difference is that video games involve lots of interaction while the movie is meant only to be viewed. The animation of the video games is more difficult as compared to the creating animation for video games.
Difference in Environments – The 3D environments for movies is not required to be completed, unlike the 3D environments for the video games. As movies include non-interactive video image the animators only need to focus on the things that are captured by the vision and they need not make numerous separate environmental objects. However, in 3D video games, environments must work on a complete 360-degree level.
Limited available Console Power – Games have a limited power of the rendering engine in the game console. As we progress in a game, the rendering engine is required to constantly create output on the basis of angle of the camera that follows you, the character data, as well as the environment factors built-in the game. It is similar to rendering digital output to video while creating an animation. The digital output needs to keep pace with your input and should be able to render as fast as you change the motions via input control. This limitation is not faced in case of movies.
Use of Sound and Sound Quality – The real-time rendering constraints makes the game very slow where voices are added to characters other than generic sounds. However, this limitation is not limited in movies, where speech and sound effects are essential for the overall effect. As movies aren’t being rendered on the basis of frame-by-frame as you watch, there is no need for cutting corners on the audio.
Artificial Intelligence vs. Scripted Motion – There are many "artificial intelligence" (AI) engines that were developed in many gaming environments for controlling the behaviour of in-game character, and making it act smarter. This has made the video game models livelier as compared to movie model as they respond to stimuli in specific manner. However, in case of movie models, the script is enacted precisely and controlled by the animators.

Animation – Best Animation Studios
0An animation studio is basically a company that produces animated media. These studios have all the facilities for the production of animated movies, TV serials and other media. They include physical equipment for production, employ animation professionals and hold a majority of stake in the sales of the media produced. Some of the best animation studios of the world are as follows.
Pixar Animation Studios – It is an American CGI animation film studio which is based in Emeryville, California, United States. It is regarded as one of the most critically acclaimed film studios. It has worked on numerous high-profile movies, chiefly in the incorporation of live-action along with computer-generated animation.
Walt Disney Animation Studios: It is the subsidiary of ‘The Walt Disney Company’ and is engaged in the creation of animated films. Walt Disney Animation Studios has released up to 49 films. Apart from the above mentioned studios, the other famous animation studios include Aardman, DreamWorks and Vanguard Animation.
Stop Motion
0Stop-motion animation refers to the animation that is created by manipulating the real-world objects physically and photographing these objects one frame of film at a time for creating the illusion of movement. There are different types of stop-motion animation available that are named on the basis of type of media used for creating the animation. The Computer software is widely applied for creating such type of animation.
Puppet animation – This animation basically involves the stop-motion puppet figures that interact with each other in a structured environment as compared to the real-world interaction in the model animation. The puppets usually have an armature inside them for keeping them in shape and steady. They are also used for restricting the movements at particular joints. Some of the popular examples of usage of Puppet Animation are Nightmare Before Christmas (US, 1993), The Tale of the Fox (France, 1937), Corpse Bride (US, 2005), and the TV series Robot Chicken. Puppetoon is created by using the techniques developed by George Pál. They are puppet-animated films that involve the usage of different version of a puppet for different frames as compared to simply manipulating the single existing puppet.
Clay animation – This animation is also called as plasticine animation and it is often abbreviated as claymation that makes use of figures constructed from clay or a similar malleable material for creating stop-motion animation. These figures consist of wire frame inside of them that can be manipulated for giving the pose to the figures. On the other hand the figures can also be constructed entirely of clay where clay creatures can be morphed into various different shapes. Some examples of clay-animated works comprise of The Gumby Show, Morph shorts, Wallace and Gromit shorts The Trap Door and others. It also includes the films like Chicken Run and The Adventures of Mark Twain.
Cutout animation – This type of animation is produced by moving 2-dimensional pieces of material like paper or cloth. It includes the examples such as Fantastic Planet, Tale of Tales, etc.
Silhouette animation – This stop motion animation is a variant of cutout animation which involves the backlighting of characters and they are visible only as silhouettes. Examples of the Silhouette animation include The Adventures of Prince Achmed and Princes et princesses.
Model animation – This refers to the stop-motion animation that is created for interaction with the live action world. In fact, it exists as a part of a live-action world. It includes the various procedures such as Intercutting, matte effects, and split screens that are used for the blending the stop-motion characters or objects with the live actors and settings. It can be observed in the movies such as Jason and the Argonauts and King Kong.
Go motion – This refers to a variant of model animation that makes use of various techniques for creating motion blur among the frames of film that is not present in the traditional stop-motion animation. The technique was discovered by Industrial Light & Magic and Phil Tippett for the creation of special effects scenes of the film The Empire Strikes Back and Vermithrax from Dragonslayer.
Object animation – This animation refers to the application of regular inanimate objects in stop-motion animation which is against the specially created items.
Graphic animation – This animation makes use of non-drawn flat visual graphic material such as photographs, magazines, newspaper clippings etc. They are sometimes manipulated in frame-by-frame for creating movement. The graphics in these animation remains stationary and the movement of stop-motion camera is used for the creation of on-screen action.
Pixilation – This animation makes use of live human actors as stop motion characters. It allows for the creation of numerous surreal effects such as disappearances and reappearances. It allows the people to appear sliding across the ground, and various other effects. Some examples of pixilation are The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb and Angry Kid shorts.

Motion Capture
0Motion capture or motion tracking refers to the procedure of recording the movement and translation of that movement on to a digital model. It is applied in entertainment, military, medical and sports applications. In case of filmmaking it points to the recording actions of human actors, and using it for animation of digital character models in either 2D or 3D computer animation. It may be called as performance capture when it includes fingers, face, and captures delicate expressions.
The motion capture sessions involves the sampling of the movements of one or more actors many times per second. With the application of the modern techniques, motion capture records the movements of the actor only instead of his or her visual appearance. This animation data is then mapped to a 3D model when the model performs similar actions as that of actor.
The movements of the Camera can also be motion captured in order that a virtual camera in the scene will tilt, pan, or dolly around the stage as determined by a camera operator and the actor is performing at the same time. Thus, here the motion capture system captures the camera and props and the actor’s performance. This permits the computer generated characters, images and sets to get the same outlook as the video images from the camera. The data is processed by a computer and movements of the actor are displayed. It also offers the desired camera positions in regards to objects in the set. This procedure of retroactively obtaining the camera movement data by using the captured footage is called as camera tracking or match moving.
There are various advantages of Motion Capture over traditional computer animation of a 3D model. It is more rapid obtaining the real time results. It can reduce the costs of key frame-based animation in entertainment applications. It is easy to recreate the complex movement and realistic physical interactions like secondary motions, exchange of forces, etc. The amount of animation data is extremely large as compared to conventional animation techniques.
