The International Tournée of Animation

0

The International Tournée of Animation refers to the annual touring program of animated films which were selected and assembled from films from many countries worldwide. These are the films which existed from the time period of 1970 to the late 1980s. These movies were released to cinemas, college campuses, art centres and museums across the US.  A typical Tournée program used to run about 105 minutes and included up to 15 to 24 animated films in the 16mm format. Each such film was 1 – 2 minutes to 15 – 18 minutes in length.

Many such films were acquired because of the result of Wright’s travels to a large number of countries for the international animated film festivals which were sponsored by ASIFA. The list of festivals included the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, the Ottawa International Animated Film Festival in Canada after 1976, the Zagreb Festival and the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in Japan.

Till the time of collapse of the Iron Curtain, ASIFA has helped in bridging the gap between East and West. It assisted the animators from Eastern Europe in attending festivals in the West and in visiting studios in the Europe and North America, as well as showing their films in-person.  Prescott Wright filmmakers John Halas, John Hubley and Faith Hubley worked hard to establish international relations and arrange for these screenings in cities along with ASIFA.

The efforts made by ASIFA had led to the increased visibility of animation movies through theatrical screenings. In the mid-1970s, the Tournée has started screening in cinemas, along with Landmark Theatres chain but gradually seen in many smaller “art houses” throughout the country. In the year 1986, Prescott Wright sold the rights for organising the Tournées to the Expanded Entertainment group in LA that continued to organize the event for many years under the Wright’s guidance.
